HFA Success Story:

Empowering Advocacy Through Strategic Planning

Overview

The Hemophilia Federation of America (HFA) is a patient-centered organization dedicated to championing the needs of families affected by debilitating bleeding disorders. Based in Washington, D.C., HFA collaborates with over 50 state and local affiliates to advocate for better therapies, accessible healthcare, and an improved quality of life for its community. In 2023, following leadership changes, HFA partnered with .orgSource to reignite its strategic planning process and lay the foundation for its 2023–2028 strategic vision.

The challenge

HFA faced several challenges that necessitated a comprehensive strategic plan:

  • Disruption in strategic planning due to turnover in leadership.
  • Need for a unified approach to address the rapidly evolving healthcare landscape and its impact on families with bleeding disorders.
  • Desire to ensure inclusivity and stakeholder engagement in developing a meaningful, actionable strategic plan.

With a new CEO in place, HFA was ready to resume the planning process and align its mission with the needs of its community in a highly challenging healthcare environment.

The Solution

.orgSource provided agile planning services to ensure an inclusive, effective, and sustainable strategic planning process. The approach included:

  1. Preparation and Stakeholder Engagement
  • Reviewed and consolidated work completed in 2022 to serve as the foundation for the new plan.
  • Created pre-read materials and a facilitation agenda tailored to HFA’s needs.
  • Engaged HFA board members, committee leaders, and executive staff to gather insights and align on priorities.
  1. Facilitated Planning Sessions
  • Conducted two two-hour strategic planning sessions with the Board of Directors. Topics included assessing HFA’s current state, revisiting the organization’s mission and vision, and setting priorities for the next five years.
  • Facilitated additional meetings with the Strategic Planning Committee and staff to develop SMART objectives and strategies.
  1. Documentation and Review
  • Delivered a high-level strategic plan draft, including clearly articulated goals, strategies, and metrics to measure progress.
  • Supported HFA staff in translating the plan into actionable tactics and preparing for operational execution.

The Results

The collaboration between HFA and .orgSource resulted in a transformative strategic plan:

  • Unified Vision: HFA’s mission and values were reaffirmed, ensuring alignment among all stakeholders.
  • Actionable Goals: A clear roadmap was created, outlining goals and strategies to address advocacy, education, and access to care.
  • Enhanced Capacity: HFA staff and leadership were equipped with tools and templates to continue the planning process into annual budgeting and operational planning.
  • Community-Centric Approach: The plan prioritized the needs of the bleeding disorders community, positioning HFA as a stronger advocate in a challenging healthcare landscape.
