National Council of Structural Engineers Associations

When the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA) recognized that artificial intelligence could significantly affect the structural engineering profession, its leadership sought a practical way to move from discussion to direction. NCSEA had a clear mission: to continuously improve the standard level of practice for structural engineering. With a new CEO in place and a strategic planning process ready to resume, the organization needed a focused plan to help its members navigate both the risks and opportunities AI would create.

.orgSource partnered with NCSEA to develop an actionable AI strategic plan that could serve as the foundation for implementation. The engagement was designed to bring together the AI Industry Advisory Council, AI Grant Team, and executive staff around a shared vision for how NCSEA could support the profession in a rapidly changing environment.

The work began with a disciplined planning process. .orgSource reviewed the planning content NCSEA had already developed, organized it into preparation materials, and created a facilitation agenda for a two-day strategic planning session. This allowed participants to enter the discussion with common context and focus their time on the highest-value questions.

During the facilitated planning session, .orgSource guided NCSEA through an environmental scan of AI’s potential positive and negative impacts on structural engineering. The group then worked to define the future NCSEA wanted to help create, establish priorities, draft goal statements, and identify strategies for supporting the profession as AI evolved.

The deliverables gave NCSEA more than meeting notes. .orgSource documented the planning discussion and outcomes, drafted a high-level strategic plan within days of the meeting, and outlined a path for translating strategy into action. The engagement also included options to develop a tactical plan, assign resources, define budgets and timelines, and provide project management support through implementation.

The result was a structured pathway for AI leadership. NCSEA gained a practical framework for turning emerging technology disruption into mission-driven action—one that connected vision, strategy, tactics, resources, and accountability.
